Introduction of Kalavantin Durg :
Kalavantin Durg (fort) trek is one of the dangerous treks in Maharashtra. It stands 2,250 ft above sea level. Kalavantin is located in the Western ghats of Raigad district, Maharashtra. It was used as a watchtower on the Konkan range. Prabalgad is a twin fort to Kalavantin Durg. Once you reach the Prabalmachi base, you can plan your trek accordingly (Kalavantin or Prabalgad). One can have a glance at the beauty of Matheran plateau from the top of both forts.
How to reach?
Reach Panvel station by train. Take the state transport bus to the base village of Kalavantin Durg. From here the route is fairly visible until the Prabalmachi base. You can also hire any private vehicles from the station to reach the base village Thakurwadi.
Starting with our trek…
We started our journey from Mumbai on a 2 wheeler at around 8 am. It took approx 2.5 hours to reach the base village. We had some breakfast before starting our trek. So our trek started by making our way up through a small mountain. The route passes through the dense forest which is visible enough. Since the route is muddy and slippery one has to be cautious during the trek. The view of mountains filled with waterfalls gives a magnificent view from the base.
We kept exploring the surroundings of the fort while ascending towards our destination. There are small waterfalls in between where you can spend some valuable time and have fun. Many trekkers keep visiting this fort throughout the year as the Prabalmachi base is one of the best camping sites. If you are a newbie, you will get an ample amount of people for any sort of help. We reached Prabalmachi plateau after 2 hours trek as we took a breather at many points.
Prabalmachi: This is the place where you will love to stay as its serene view and freshness give a lot of good vibes. That’s the reason trekkers often visit this place for camping. If you can plan for a stay then this is one option and we have provided the contacts of local residents below who arrange tents stay and food as per your requirement.

Heading towards our destination:
After spending some time and relaxing at the plateau, we began our trek towards Kalavantin Durg. The approach to Kalavantin Durg from Prabalmachi is a bit tough during monsoon as the path is muddy and slippery. Once you reach the base of Kalavantin Durg, just look at the enthralling carvings of 80-degree rock-cut stairs.
Here’s the main challenging part of this trek. When I stared at this sky touching pinnacle with narrow steps and no support, I gave up. Apparently, negative thoughts were running in my mind. What if I become conscious while climbing up, what if I couldn’t control my fears, what if someone couldn’t hold me if I fall down. These were the weirdest thoughts I was thinking of.
However, my teammate cheered me up and I challenged myself that if I could do this, I will be one of the happiest people in the world to fight my fears. (PS: I was an acrophobic person)
I started climbing the steps carefully at the beginning which were covered with algae due to monsoon. Some adventure itself got added to it when the rain started showering which lead to foggy surroundings and I was unable to see anything except my next step. I kept on climbing without looking back.
Finally on the top of Kalavantin Durg!!!
Once I reached the top of Kalavantin, I was the happiest creature in the world to challenge myself and overcome it. It was like I have won something I thought I couldn’t achieve. The view that you will experience at the top is just incomparable. The winds and clouds pass by so closely that you will feel like you are in heaven. You can also have a view of Prabalgad which is adjacent to Kalavantin.
Do not miss such opportunities in life where you can do things which you thought you could not. And yes, don’t miss to create some memories out of such amazing moments in your life. After exploring the summit, we were ready for the return journey. We spent some more time at the plateau while descending and headed back home.
